Xerocomus subtomentosus
Suede Bolete
Every day, walking the dog in the woods, I have half an eye open for whatever fungi may be around.
Unfortunately I don't pay half as much attention to what is going on in my own back garden!
Which explains why these two fb's were past their best before I spotted them.
They are listed in most of the books as Boletus subtomentosus, however they are in fact one of the Xerocomoid Boletes of which there are two genera, Xerocomus and Xerocomellus.
Geoffrey Kibby's Key to the British Boletes offers an easy way of distinguishing between the Xerocomoid and "Traditional Boletes". When the tubes are split (not cut!) they tend to tear in half lengthwise, leaving numerous half tubes, unlike the other Bolete species where the tubes tend to remain whole.
